CBC

CBC is one of the official NHL broadcasters in Canada. Signing up is painless, although you may need a valid Canadian postal code (e.g., R3T 4A7, V1M 1Y8.) to connect to CBC Gem. Note that Canadian viewers should also be able to watch the 2024 All-Star Game live on CBC.

Ran.de

The German free-to-air channel ProSieben and its sports streaming platform, Ran.de, will also air select NHL games, starting with a weekly Sunday match. German fans can always check the Ran.de hockey page for specific games and timings.

What are NHL TV blackouts?

NHL TV blackouts are geo-restrictions that prevent users from watching certain games in certain regions. Each NHL team has a number of regional games that are exclusively sold to regional broadcasters. For example, games involving the Bruins are blacked out in the Boston TV market; fans can watch on NESN, but they cannot watch a simulcast on ESPN+ or NHL.tv.

As a result, if you live in a region where a game is being broadcast by a regional broadcaster, you will not be able to watch that game on NHL.tv or the NHL Network. This is true even if you have an NHL.tv subscription.

Why are NHL games blacked out?

NHL games are blacked out for a number of reasons, including regional broadcasting rights, local television contracts, and cable and satellite distribution agreements.

How to watch 2023-24 NHL games with a VPN

NHL.tv, ESPN+, and Hulu+Live TV are all among the best ways to watch NHL games this season. Learn more about the services below.

ESPN+

Price: 25 USD/month

For Americans, ESPN+ is the go-to source for watching the NHL anywhere, on any device. Keep in mind that games broadcast on local television in a particular region may be blacked out on ESPN+, as are some games shown nationally. So if you’re on the road and your game is blacked out when it shouldn’t be, make sure you’ve selected a server location outside the affected region.

Hulu + Live TV

Price: 77 USD/month

Channels: ABC, ESPN, TBS, TNT

Hulu does not offer a free trial, but it does have a live TV package for American fans that includes all the main channels for secure NHL streams as well as many regional sports networks. Hulu and ESPN+ will also have exclusive NHL games this season.

Sling TV

Price: Varies

Channels: ABC, ESPN, NHL Network (Sports Extra) TBS, TNT

Sling TV provides U.S. viewers with access to most channels airing NHL games, and ABC is also available in select markets. Please note that Sling no longer offers a free trial.

Watching on a computer? For the best streaming experience, use the ExpressVPN browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.

NHL.TV

Price: Varies

Country: International

NHL.tv allows fans in most regions outside of the United States and Canada to live stream every game on multiple devices. The NHL.tv price varies depending on your country. For example, hockey fans in the United Kingdom need to pay roughly 15 GBP (roughly 19 USD) per month. The NHL’s official website has a complete list of countries where NHL.tv is available.

Why is my VPN not working with NHL.tv or ESPN+?

ExpressVPN’s advanced server network is optimized for compatibility with both ESPN+ and NHL.tv, and most users can stream without any issues. But if you should ever encounter a problem, our dedicated Support Team is available by live chat 24/7 to help you overcome any obstacles in trying to watch your favorite hockey team. And all ExpressVPN plans are covered by a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee.

Watch NHL games using services with free trials

YouTube TV

Price: 73 USD/month and up

Channels: ABC, ESPN, TNT, TBS

Country: U.S.

YouTube TV offers Americans a variety of channels that carry NHL games, and the subscription costs 73 USD/month. You may need to submit a U.S. ZIP code (e.g., 10022, 48104, etc.), but it accepts a wide array of payment options. If you don’t feel like committing to YouTube TV, use the free trial.

Note: You may need a valid U.S. credit/debit card or PayPal to subscribe to YouTube TV. You can still subscribe to YouTube TV via Google Play, even if you don’t have a U.S. credit/debit card.

Fubo

Price: 75 USD/month (base package; price increases to watch NHL games)

Channels: ABC, ESPN, NHL Network

Country: U.S.

Although Fubo offers a seven-day free trial, it does not have Turner channels (including TBS and TNT) as of January 2024. However, fans from the United States can watch NHL games through Fubo if you purchase Max and the Bleacher Report Sports Add-On tier for Max, each of which cost 10 USD/month.

DirecTV Stream

Price: 65 USD/month and up

Channels: ABC, ESPN, NHL Network (Ultimate plan and up), TBS, TNT

Comments

  1. Je me suis inscrit aujourd’ui pour un abonmnement de 6 mois et je voudrais le canceller puis avoir mon crédit merci

  2. Will this similarly work logging into my TV provider through the VPN? I’m located in Victoria B.C., and do not get the Toronto Maple Leafs games regularly. Will logging into a server in the east circumvent this?

  3. I’m in Peru and would like to watch the NHL Stanley Cup.. could you please let me know which one is the best option to subscribe. Thank you in advance

  4. I’ve been unable to sign up successfully to anything in order to watch NHL – they all know I’m using a VPN and they don’t allow it.

  5. I live in BC and can get out of market Canucks games through our Roku but not local games. How do I set up my Roku to get all games?

  6. Youtube TV detects ExpressVPN. And won’t let you watch anything. Just thought I’d share that so others can pick a different option other than YouTube TV.

  7. I would like to watch maple leafs vs. bruins, april 21, 2019 but it is not broadcast in playa del carmen, on sky tv. what can I do? help.

  8. Getting hockey using an USA Zipcode has 2 problems for Canadians.
1/. Most Canadians do not have an USA zipcode.
2/. If you can connect to USA, it is likely that you will not see too many Canadian games.

    1. Hi Joseph,

To watch the games featuring Canadian teams, you can check the team’s schedule and then connect to a server location where the broadcaster is available from.

For example, you can check the schedule for the Canucks (https://www.nhl.com/canucks/schedule/2018-10-01/PT), then connect to a server location where a broadcaster is showing the next Canucks game. To find the USA Zipcode you need, simply Google “(location name) zip code” and you’ll be all set.

  9. Absolutely love the service of ExpressVPN. I watch hockey all season in every market with this service. Not to mention the privacy on all my devices over my network with a dd-wrt router. I switched from another provider and it was well worth it. Your staff and customer support is second to none. Thanks for a great product and service, and Go Preds!

  10. I am cutting cable ASAP. I am a little confused on how to bypass blackouts for NHL, specifically Nashville Predators. I bought Roku, and was looking at Sling tv and Fubo Tv, only to find our that the Fox Sports south feed would more than likely be blacked out. Will the express VPN solve this problem? Does the VPN work through the Roku setup? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

  11. hello I want to cut my cable and keep . watching the boston bruins on cable. How does this work ? I am not to good with a computer . what will I need . how to hook to my tv I am getting a amazon jail broken fire stick and cutting cable , what do I need to do

    1. Hi Joseph,

You just need to a broadcast subscription (see the guide above) and ExpressVPN. Simply fire up the VPN and log in to your broadcast subscription, you’ll be all set 🙂

  12. I will be in Florida from January 1st to the end of April in a rental accomodation. What is my best way of obtaining all Toronto Maple Leaf games while in Florida for the three months? I have my computer with me , a chromecast and there is a tv available with a HDMI connection. Their current cable subscriber is Comcast and in the past I have streamed my Netflix subscription from my computer to that tv with no visual problems. An additional bonus is that they do not have an HD subscription although they have an HD tv and the stream through my chromecast projects in HD. Would my doing this result in an additional cost to my owners cable costs?

    1. I am in Florida at the same time. I gave up trying to get the Leafs on anything but NHL Gamecentre. I get it free with my Rogers subscription. It works great here. The problem I am having is getting the Tampa Bay Lightning! They blacking a lot of those games out in the Tampa area.
