ExpressVPN’s advanced protection offers additional safety and security features for you and your family. When enabled, it can block intrusive display ads, trackers, malicious sites, and adult content.

We run a DNS-based traffic blocker running on the user’s device to stop all apps and browsing sessions from communicating with third parties on our blocklists. This approach is simpler and safer than running the traffic blocker on the server side.

The full suite of advanced protection features includes Threat Manager, an ad blocker, and parental controls, and is available on the ExpressVPN app for Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, and Linux, as well as ExpressVPN Aircove.

Important: The advanced protection features only work when the VPN is turned on, and when the Lightway protocol is in use. Users who wish to use these features without turning the VPN on can do so via Aircove.

What are the advanced protection features?
How to enable (or disable) advanced protection

What are the advanced protection features?

Advanced protection is a group of safety and security settings that includes Threat Manager, ad blocking, and parental controls.

Threat Manager

Many of the apps and websites you visit keep records of and share your activity with third-party companies, including trackers, scammers, and malware sites.

Threat Manager gives you more control over what companies know about you and what you do online. It prevents all apps and websites you visit from tracking your online activities, while also blocking malicious websites in order to protect you from spyware and phishing domains.

Threat Manager is available within the ExpressVPN apps for Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, and Linux, as well as Aircove.

Ad blocker

Ad blocker prevents most display ads from being shown to you when browsing the web.

Currently, ad blocker is available within the ExpressVPN apps for Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, and Linux, as well as Aircove.

Parental controls

With ExpressVPN’s parental controls, you can prevent anyone, including your children, from accessing most adult sites.

Our adult site blocklist is compiled from publicly available and open source lists of known adult sites. We regularly review and update these blocklists so that you can stay protected against the latest threats.

Additionally, parental controls for Aircove enable you to block the internet at certain times. This is very helpful for reducing your child’s online time.

Parental controls are available within the ExpressVPN apps for Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, and Linux, as well as Aircove.

Important: If your Apple TV is running tvOS 16 or older, update to tvOS 17 or newer to use the ExpressVPN app for tvOS.
Note: For older Apple TV models, you can use our MediaStreamer service or connect your Apple TV to a Wi-Fi router running ExpressVPN’s router software. MediaStreamer is designed for a smooth streaming experience but does not offer the privacy and security benefits of a VPN. Therefore, we do not recommend using MediaStreamer if you’re able to use the app instead.

ExpressVPN’s advanced protection features are a group of settings that include Threat Manager, ad blocking, and parental controls. When enabled, you can block ads, trackers, malicious sites, and adult sites for a safer online experience.

Note: Ad blocking and parental controls are coming soon to Mac and Linux.

These features work by blocking apps and websites on your device from communicating with known malware sites, trackers, and adult sites on our blocklists. The blocking occurs locally, and the blocked domains never leave your device.

Our blocklists are compiled from the following open-source lists of known ads, trackers, adult sites, and malicious hosts. We update our blocklists once a week, and will continue to improve on the range of ads that we block. You can also report ads to us by contacting Support, and we will look into blocking them.

Ads
AdAway
Tiuxo hostlist – ads
yoyo.org
anudeepND adservers list
hostsVN adservers-all list

Trackers

DigitalSide Threat-Intel malware domains list
FadeMind’s Risky Hosts
FadeMind’s Spam
Hoshsadiq’s browser-based crypto mining list
Mandiant APT1 Report

Important: Advanced protection only blocks the trackers, malicious sites, ads, and adult sites identified in the source blocklists. Please continue to follow the best practices for protecting your online privacy and security.

Similar to authentication apps like Authy, Keys can easily generate 2FA codes—also known as time-based one-time passwords (TOTPs)—for websites or apps with 2FA enabled.

When we first found out about the TunnelCrack vulnerability, we immediately checked our apps and verified it only impacted the ExpressVPN app for iOS.

Next, our engineering team worked to develop a fix, which was deployed to all customers using the ExpressVPN app for iOS on July 17, 2023.

The fix we put in place sends you a notification when the ExpressVPN app for iOS detects you are connected to an unsecured Wi-Fi network vulnerable to TunnelCrack. This notification warns you that your device is connected to an unsecured Wi-Fi network and at risk from TunnelCrack, and recommends you turn off local network access.

To turn off local network access:

  1. Open the ExpressVPN app for iOS and tap Options > Settings > Network Protection.
  2. Toggle Block internet when VPN connection is interrupted on.
  3. Toggle Allow access to devices on local network off.
